There is a right way and a wrong way to market on Facebook and in this Facebook Marketing Beginners Guide we are going to show you the right way.

It can be tricky though. The right way will get you lots of new friends…. but the wrong way can get you blocked.

Have you ever wondered how some people can build a business using Facebook as their main resource?

Some people are just really good at connecting and communication on social media platforms. They are practicing techniques that win and they have a knack for it.

Not everyone does.

However, for those of us who are not natural people magnets, the methods that work can be practiced and learned. These techniques may not make us equal with the "kings of social media", but they can get us into a much better place than we are now.

Facebook marketing beginners will especially need to work on this skill. People that are brand new to Facebook will not know the exact best methods for connecting with other networkers.

For Facebook Marketing Beginners It Can Be Tricky

Social networking is all about engagement. A lot of new beginner Facebook marketers are not fully keen on or aware of that yet. It is however something that we will be concentrating on throughout this guide.

Creating engagement has a profound affect on a persons Facebook marketing success. Facebook operates according to their algorithm platform which determines who sees your posts and your content.

It's all programmed in, and it's the engagement that triggers the algorithm. They call this your "reach". Get your reach to go up or expand, and more people are seeing your content. That becomes the objective.

I think it's important to specify now that we are talking about "organic" Facebook marketing, or the free side of Facebook. There is also a side of Facebook that is paid advertising, and things are vastly different on the paid ads side.

That is an altogether different subject though for a different day.

So What Do We Mean Here? … What Exactly Is Facebook Engagement?

Most Facebook marketing beginners that I have spoken with would define Facebook engagement as likes, comments, and shares. But what a lot of them don’t realize is just what this engagement leads to.

world map symbolizing facebook engagement

These Facebook beginners are not certain how it can benefit their business and their marketing efforts.  Ensuring that posts get positioned high on news feeds and seen by more people is the goal. And that comes from knowing how to please the algorithm.

Facebook engagement increases your posts positioning and length of time in newsfeed. It’s not so much anymore about the number of contacts you have. That's the way it used to be. But now it's more about  the engagement of the ones you do have. How many are “talking about this”.

don't post like a spammer

To get more likes, comments, and shares on Facebook you need to post in a conversational, inspirational, educational, motivational, or humorous manner. Negativity, whining, and link bombing (here’s my link buy my stuff) will get you nowhere.

If you post like a spammer people will run from you. Or worse, you will get blocked from the very people you need to connect with.

If you post negativity you will attract negative type people. And if you post nothing but your business, you will get the same in return.

No one wants to get blocked or unfriended. So learn how to post in a way that attracts others. I mentioned above that some people are just naturals at attraction marketing. But for those that are not it really is a skill that can be learned.

A big part of Facebook marketing is leading by example. This goes for beginners and pros. Show your friends how to take the high road. They will learn from you and become loyal followers.

This is an area that a lot of Facebook marketing beginners may need to improve upon. I know that I sure did when first getting started. But if you can correct the bad habits early in your career then you won't remain a beginner for long!

Providing value and high quality content will create engagement

Providing value within your Facebook marketing will create engagement with the right kind of people. Quality content consists of educational posts and training material. Consider conversational topics, surveys, questions, and asking for opinions.

Even jokes and humor (it’s not necessary to be serious all the time) are excellent for engaging others. And anything else that will get people talking in a professional, or a friendly manner.

But don’t just post, and post, and post. That is often referred to as a hit and run tactic and is a classic Facebook beginners mistake.

Have you ever seen someone post something good, that creates engagement, but that never comes back to participate?

facebook icon

It doesn't make any sense. Facebook marketers, and even beginner Facebook marketers, must learn right away the importance of creating conversation and engagement.

Instead, engage yourself with others and their posts too. Jump into conversations…comment and engage yourself and make friends. Congratulate people on their achievements and tell them they are doing a good job.

When you engage this way it becomes a two-way conversation which keeps it going. This engagement is what Facebook picks up on.

Get to know other business owners and leaders, regardless if you consider them a prospect or not. In fact don’t even judge others as prospects or as to how they can help you. Rather think about how you can help them, or how you can learn from them.

So you see, it does not matter if you are a Facebook marketing beginner or a Facebook marketing pro, it's all about the networking and the engagement.

you can talk about your business if you do it right

It’s perfectly ok to talk about your business, if done tactfully. Like everything else there’s a right way and a wrong way.

Unfortunately most Facebook beginners struggle with this one at first.

The wrong way is spam.  “Here’s my link buy my stuff” or “here’s my link join my deal” is definitely NOT the way to say hello. Neither is dropping links without being asked. That will get you nowhere fast.

It's all about the relationship first. People join people. And they don't join people they don't know, like, and trust. You must practice attraction marketing and give people reasons to want to work with you.

Tell them who you are and what you are about. If there are common interests the conversation will find it's way to your business. Then you can tell them why they should buy your stuff or join your deal.

And I don’t mean random spammy features and benefits of the program. I mean why they should buy from YOU, or why they should join YOU.

And as I mentioned above, this is one area that is easy to spot the beginner Facebook marketers. It just seems natural when first getting started to throw your biz and your links out there.

But don't worry, it won't take long to realize there is a better way.

Get personal and be yourself

Videos are excellent for creating engagement in the form of likes, shares, and comments. Particularly personal videos but also newsworthy and educational or inspirational videos as well.

How-to videos open many doors. People appreciate others who want to teach and help. Teaching is a great way of providing useful content and information … the kind of information people find valuable.

Don't be afraid to just get real. Genuine and unique content is always better than hype. Show your vulnerabilities. Your likes and dislikes. Let people know you have fears and insecurities.

facebook marketing beginners meeting

At the same time you can show them your strengths and your weaknesses. When you get real like that people can and will relate to you. And they will get to know you better and become real friends.

even a facebook beginner has a story

It's true. Everyone has a story they can tell. Including the Facebook marketing beginners.

Tell people why you started with your opportunity and what it has meant for you. You could share with them how you were sick and tired of what you were doing before. And that you are excited to be changing your life.

facebook marketing beginners have a story to tell also

Maybe talk about how you solved a problem, or how you provided a solution to someone else's problem. People like to hear about others overcoming the odds and figuring things out.

Share how you got started, what you had to learn, and how you learned it. Did you read and study? Did you happen across a video that moved you? Maybe you partnered up with a mentor, or joined a team that included training.

Perhaps there was a course that you took, or a class that you attended. Share how you now want to teach others what you have learned. Share your experiences to empower others.

This is how you will gain followers, and likes and share and comments. It's Facebook networking, aka Facebook marketing.

take Others on your journey With You

Stories and curiosity are what get’s people’s attention, and selling yourself is what builds relationships and work partners.

When you are going to meet a prospect, or attend a training webinar, or seminar, or traveling to a company event or mastermind, take social media with you on the journey.

Include them on what you are learning and being trained on. Share what you are getting out of it and how you are benefiting, and how they could benefit also.

Introduce them to your new friends and family. Take them on your journey and show the way.

This is Facebook marketing at it's finest. Instead of just saying hey I did this and did that, take your contacts with you. Tell them you are about to do this or you are on your way to do that.

Bring them along for the ride. Include them and make it about them as much as about you. This will paint your vision that they can see themselves included in as well.

Put these things into action and watch what happens

Any Facebook marketing beginner will notice a huge uptick in their results by practicing these simple suggestions.

More friends seeing, commenting, and sharing your posts which leads to more "friends of friends" seeing your posts.

The more engagement you get, the wider your reach will get. The wider your reach gets, the more engagement you are going to get. And so you see… this can benefit your Facebook marketing a great deal.

You just need to put it into action.

So be personal, friendly and helpful, and provide useful content with your Facebook marketing. It will take you a long way. And if you are a Facebook marketing beginner I sincerely hope you got some value from this post.

What the heck is Facebook engagement bait? Sounds kinda scary. Maybe it has something to do with the Facebook algorithm?

Right. It does. Well, in a way it does. But keep reading and we'll tell you exactly what Facebook engagement baiting is.

We'll also tell you the 5 main types of baiting for engagement that Facebook has singled out, and why they should be avoided at all costs.

Most People On Facebook Know What Facebook Engagement Is

Most know that Facebook engagement is simply the interaction that occurs between users.

They also know what the Facebook algorithm is, and what the term "reach" on Facebook means. They know that increasing their engagement will increase that "reach".

So they are doing all they can to make that happen. They want more of their friends to see their posts.

But there's a right way and a wrong way to increase engagement. Too many are doing it the wrong way.

facebook engagement baiting

And after Facebook's recent announcement, those doing it wrong are in danger of getting their pages dinged. Or worse yet their accounts.

The Facebook Algorithm Is Not Dumb

... in fact it is pretty darn smart and getting smarter every day. They know what's going on and they know what people are doing when they bait for engagement.

And based upon the feedback of the majority of users, that are taking action.

Facebook's Announcement Was A Shocker!

Facebook made an announcement that sent shockwaves through the people who are using these bait tactics to get engagement on their posts.

They have received feedback from a large number of users complaining about the spammy and valueless posts that coax them into liking, commenting, and sharing posts.

These 'engagement baiting' posts go against the user experience that Facebook is trying to create. They know that the intent of these engagement baiting tactics is to trick the algorithm into greater reach rewards.

facebook engagement baiting

Facebook has decided to do just the opposite. They will begin penalizing people and pages that are baiting for engagement. That is exactly why you should avoid Facebook engagement baiting at all costs.

So the baiters really are not creating engagement that leads to more people seeing their posts. Getting dinged as a baiter by Facebook is causing a lower reach, not a higher one.

Facebook Is Hard At Work Perfecting Their Enhanced "Learning Model"

The model can more easily detect the engagement bait activities. Those posts will now show less, not more. In addition, chronic abusers' future posts will be negatively affected.

At the time of their announcement, over the next several weeks would be the roll-out of this user-level demotion. That will most likely put it in full operation as of now.

If you are one who is participating in these Facebook engagement baiting methods consider this your warning.

Keep reading we are about to tell you EXACTLY what engagement baiting is, and what to do instead.

First let me say this. There is a disclaimer. Facebook is not trying to penalize or discourage authentic and legitimate posts. Not at all. They want to reward those who are doing it right.

They Had This To Say ...

"Posts that ask people for help, advice, or recommendations, such as circulating a missing child report, raising money for a cause, or asking for travel tips, will not be adversely impacted by this update."

They Also Said This ...

"Instead, we will demote posts that go against one of our key News Feed values — authenticity. Similar to our other recent efforts to demote clickbait headlines and links to low-quality web page experiences, we want to reduce the spread of content that is spammy, sensational, or misleading in order to promote more meaningful and authentic conversations on Facebook"

So What Exactly Is Facebook Engagement Baiting?

Facebook's goal is not to take the fun out of your experience. Nor are they trying to make it more difficult for you to market your business or your brand in any way. In fact just the opposite.

They want to provide the best user experience possible. They just need you to be genuine and not revert to tactcs that try to circumvent the system.

The baiting tactics go against that objective. They want you to post content that is authentic and relevant to your business or your message, and that has value. This benefits everyone.

So ... back to explaining what Facebook engagement baiting is. Baiting for engagement is a method of goading people into engaging on posts using valueless and irrelevant content to increase their reach on News Feed.

You've All Seen Engagement Baiting In Action

And according to Facebook a lot of users are sick of it. They have watched these tactics go around for too long now.

The result: users are marking those posts as spam. The next result? Facebook is putting a stop to it.

Personally, am not at all surprised to see Facebook taking this action. My only surprise is that it took this long.

Some will question this move. After all, these type posts can be amusing and entertaining. But to a business owner or a person trying to market something, surely they will choose to conform to the wishes of the majority of their audiences. And the feedback from those audiences doesn't lie.

Here Are The 5 Types Of Engagement Posts That Will Do You More Harm Than Good:

Comment Baiting

These are popular Facebook engagement baiting posts with many different versions. Some are even going viral.

One style has the poster claiming Facebook is acting up again and no one is seeing their posts. They ask the audience to please comment so they know the post is being seen.

This is a classic example of commment baiting. But Facebook believes they are spammy in nature. They say there's no value to these posts.

And the recipients of the posts ... most of them anyway ... know what it's really all about.

facebook engagement baiting

The person posting believes that by creating engagement on their post the Facebook algorithm will reward them with points. And points lead to a wider reach.

But as stated earlier, now it will lead to just the opposite. If you are doing this, stop doing it.

facebook engagement baiting

Tag Baiting

Baiting your friends to tag their friends on your post is another Facebook no-no. They consider this engagement bait as well. Not to mention all the negative feedback they are recieing from unhappy users.

Getting tagged on a post lands that post on the tagged persons timeline. And some people just don't like that. Their timeline is for their posts, not someone else's stuff.

Facebook's tagging feature is intended for people to call attention to those who are actually included in the image they are posting. It's not intended for tagging 50 friends a person may think needs to see their post.

facebook engagement baiting

I see people do this all the time and can't help but cringe each time. It's such a spammy move and Facebook thinks so too. You'll get dinged and you'll lose points doing it. The result will be just the opposite of the intended goal.

facebook engagement baiting

React Baiting

Facebook reactions are great for your audience to express how they feel about your post. It's a well received feature used often.

However Facebook believes that sometimes it gets used in a way that was not intended. They consider it engagement baiting when that occurs.

It's ok to ask your readers if they agree with you. It's not ok to tell them to Like if they agree. Or to Like if this, or to Like if that. The readers will tell you if they like what you are saying or not. They don't have to be told to do so, and they don't want to feel expected to do so.

facebook engagement baiting

Facebook doesn't want you to try and force the readers to comment or engage with a specific reaction in any way.

facebook engagement baiting

Vote Baiting

This got popular for a while until facebook started cracking down on it. They consider random off-the-cuff voting to ilicit sharing, comments, or reactions to be a form of bait engagement.

Asking for reaction votes on a subject that has no real meaning or that is obviously used just to create engagement should be avoided now.

facebook engagement baiting

Share Baiting

The 5th Facebook engagement baiting method is share baiting. Using a gift or a reward in exchange for sharing a post is to Facebook a form of engagement bait.

It's perfectly okay to ask your audience to share your content if they consider it valuable or helpful to others. But not to receive a gift.

facebook engagement baiting

The bottom line is this. Facebook algorithm is smart and getting smarter all the time. If you are posting simply to entice likes, comments, shares, or reactions, no matter how well disguised you think it is, your content will be seen less, not more.

If you are asking questions that you could really care less what the answer is, in an attempt to trick the algorithm, you're better off not doing it.

Facebook is trying to create a better more valuable News Feed for everyone. They consider those tactics counter-productive to their goals.

Besides, are the Facebook engagement baiting techniques mentioned above really helpful to your business, your brand, or your cause anyway?

Use Curiosity Instead

Creating curiosity in your posts is far more effective. So is asking questions. If those posts are also providing honest value and benefits then you have a double win.

Try to stimulate a readers thought waves enough to encourage engagement.. If you can draw them into a conversation or entice questions back you are achieving your need for engagement.

Putting genuine thought into your posts, and delivering useful and helpful content will provide more satisfactory results for you, your reader, and your business.

Provide education, inspiration, and motivation. Throw some humor and entertainment into the mix and you are well on your way to creating a real following. No baiting required.

Conclusion

Facebook engagement is the interaction that occurs between users. Most prominently on their posts in News Feed. Facebook rewards users that are creating engagment with better reach, allowing more friends to see their posts.

Unfortunately, in their quest to gain more of this engagement, often times users are practicing what Facebook refers to as engagement baiting, which they do not endorse.

As a result, they have made an announcement that the engagement baiting will be means for penalizing as opposed to rewarding. Those doing the baiting will get fewer friends seeing their posts, not more friends seeing their posts.

We have provided you with an explanation of the 5 main engagement baiting post types, along with examples. We have also made suggestions of more preferred methods of getting engagement.

Final conclusion:

Facebook engagement baiting is not worth getting your pages and accounts penalized. There are better more effective and more efficient methods for creating engagement while showing yourself as a leader and an authority figure that others will happily follow.

organic-reach-jpgOrganic Reach on Facebook: Your Questions Answered

Are you frustrated with your facebook posts reaching only a small percentage of your friends or fans?

Are you familiar with the term organic reach? … Do you know what it is?

It seems you’re not the only ones that are frustrated…apparently plenty have been asking Facebook what’s going on.

In this post we are going to summarize their answers to the inquiries, taken from their blog earlier this summer.

So let’s start with a definition of Organic Reach according to Facebook: Organic reach refers to how many people you can reach for free on Facebook by posting to your Page. They go on to say that they know the severe drop in reach is a pain point for many businesses, and that they are committed to helping you understand what’s driving the change.

organic-reach-jpgWhy is organic reach declining?

There are two main reasons.

1. More and more content is being created and shared every day … far more content than there is time to absorb or read. As a result, competition in News Feed is increasing, and it’s becoming harder for any story to gain exposure. In addition people are also liking more pages…50% more than last year, increasing the competition even more.

2. This involves how News Feed works. It’s designed to show people content that is relevent to them. They choose by looking at thousands of factors relative to each person.

According to them they have made some key changes to improve how News Feed chooses content. They say they’ve gotten better at showing high-quality content and that they’ve cleaned up the spam. The result: News Feed is becoming more engaging even as the amount of content being shared continues to grow.

Why not just show everything — every piece of content from every friend and Page — and let people decide what they want to see?

There are issues with this that create unwanted limitations. People are busy and only have so much time. They will miss content that is not near the top but that they would find most valuable to them. Facebook claims that through their testing they have determined that the News Feed ranking system offers a better more engaging experience for users.

Is organic reach dropping because Facebook is trying to make more money?organic-reach-jpg

They say no, but that’s debatable for many I’m sure. They claim their goal is simply to provide the best experience possible. They also say it’s better for businesses. The more active and engaged they are in their News Feed, then the more active and engaged they will be with business content.

Is Facebook the only marketing platform that’s seen declines in organic reach?

The internet is trendy, as are marketing platforms. Search engines provided way more traffic to businesses then they do now. As the competition to rank high got more fierce the engines had to work harder to provide the most relevent and useful content, and as a result organic reach diminished. Any marketing platform that grows at a fast rate and gets saturated will cause challenges for the platform to continue to provide relevent and valuable content to the users.

Ok, there’s more content now. But what’s the value of having more people like my Page? I paid good money for my fans on Facebook, and now I can’t reach as many of them.

Fans absolutely have value.

– Your ads drive on average 50% more recall when a person sees that their friend likes your business… The more fans that you have, the more of their friends will pay attention.

– Fans give your business credibility

– The more engagement you get, the further your reach.

– Fans also make the ads you run on Facebook more efficient in our ads auction.organic-reach-jpg

So, how should I use Facebook for my business?

Organic reach has diminished, yes, but organic content still has value, and Pages that publish great content — content that teaches people something, entertains them, makes them think, or in some other way adds value to their lives — can still reach people in News Feed.

Having said that, Facebook is far more effective for business when you add paid advertising to the equation. You will reach a broader audience, with leads to greater returns.

How do I know things won’t keep changing?

Things will keep changing… hopefully more often for the better. Facebook says they will continue to innovate on our behalf, and that they will be more transparent and helpful to the businesses that market on facebook. It’s yet to be seen exactly what that means

Facebook Marketing Mistakes – they can wreck your facebook experience.

Are you new to facebook marketing, unsure of what to do, or how to do it properly?

Do you want to know what the most common facebook marketing mistakes are and how to avoid them?

In this post we share highlights with you from a great pod cast interview with social media expert Brian Carter, author of The Like Economy and LinkedIn for Business, conducted by Michael Stelzner of Social Media Examiner.

Brian develops strategies and social media fanbases for companies of all sizes. In the article he talks about the misconceptions that facebook is like other marketing channels. But it’s facebook-marketing-mistakes-jpgnot like other marketing channels and if you treat it as such that would be a mistake. You won’t be leveraging it as you could be. Facebook doesn’t work so well for product marketing. That’s not the behavior that people are doing and that they want to see. You have to USE facebook not just treat is as a means to sell products.

This requires a mind set shift. Moving away from features to benefits can be advantageous, but still not good enough. Bridge the gap by selling the dream and the vision. Turn your message into images, humor, education, motivation, inspiration, and provide solutions to problems. Content creation and content curation (other people’s stuff) will get the attention of your readers. If you are not putting out engaging content that compels people to like share and comment, then you are committing facebook marketing mistakes, and your fans will stop getting your posts due to facebook’s formula. Experiment with new posts regularly and gauge the engagement using the reports that are available.. and get personal.

facebook-marketing-mistakes-jpgSome of the biggest mistakes people make when posting on facebook is not reaching the right people. Another mistake is not reaching enough of the right people, and not reaching those fans over and over again. Facebook’s edge rank algorithm regulates this reach and if you are not giving them what they want to see you get lost and forgotten. Give them what they want… more images than links. Then you have to persuade them and stay in front of them until they are ready… shorten the sales cycle if you can. Use your metrics and reports so you know what’s working and what’s not.
