When I first started blogging I often wondered what the fuss about keywords was all about. Was it really important? How do they benefit me? Do keywords really matter?

Do you find yourself asking the same questions?

In this blog post we will answer these questions.

First let me state .... I'm not a keyword or an SEO expert. But I do a lot or reading and studying on the subject and I find that being a student allows me to share what I'm learning. I learn better and remember longer if I turn right around and teach what I learn.

I started my research by typing in the phrase "do keywords really matter" into Google Search. It seems I'm not the only one asking or writing on this topic. It's actually quite popular.

Keywords Really Do Matter

Maybe not quite to the degree that they used to, but yes, keywords really do matter. When used properly..

A very important key thing is HOW they are used. The days of keyword stuffing are long gone.

There was a time that a person could get an article or post ranked simply by inserting a bunch of their main keywords into the article in any way, shape, or form. Not only does that not work any longer, it will work against you if you do it.

Your keywords need to be strategically placed. Not only in the title, the URL, and the meta description, but throughout the post as well. But it has to make sense. The keywords must fit accordingly, so as to flow with the content.

Google is now looking more for high quality content that has value and that reads well. Therefore, the keywords must be integrated and a relevant part of the article.

Profitable Keywords vs Junk Keywords

There is a difference. Keywords can make you or break you. That's why I say there are profitable keywords, and there are junk keywords.

If keywords are used correctly, they can be very profitable. But if used incorrectly, they are junk. And sometimes worse than junk. They can give you a black eye with Google and lead to you being penalized.

If a person is trying to trick Google with improperly used keywords they will be sorry. You may have heard of Black Hat SEO vs White Hat SEO. That's a whole other subject and post, but we'll only be talking about and recommending White Hat SEO. Doing it the right way.

I will say this much on the matter. If you are using Black Hat SEO methods, you are playing with fire. Google will get you sooner or later.

If Keywords Really Matter How Do I Choose The Right Ones

There are tools and methods of keyword research that will help you learn to choose good relevant long-tail keywords.

Keyword Tool is free and it's easy to use you. Type in the main keyword and the tool will show you a lot of variations of that word. They are listed in order by how often they are used in searches. This will give you ideas.

keywords really matter

You can also use Google Search itself.

First you'll get the SERP results (Search Engine Rank Page) so you can see what others are doing, and secondly you'll see at the bottom of the SERP page Google's "related searched" listing which is a great way to revise keywords.

Is Your Keyword Too Popular ? How Can You Find Out?

Google Search can also tell you how popular a keyword is. Realizing this can help you deter from trying to compete with words and with bloggers that are just too big and too competitive to even mess around with.

To find out start first with a general and popular keyword and note the number of pages of results.

keywords really matter

Now try a long-tail keyword. Use "quotes" around the phrase so the results are only for that particular phrase or set of words. Look at how many pages of results you get. Do you notice the difference? Would you rather compete with words that bring back 100's of pages, or a handful of pages?

Do you think it would be easier to get on the first page of Google using long tailed keywords?

If you answered yes, you are correct.

Keywords Really Matter For PPC Advertising Too

If you have expanded to the level of doing some Google Adwords advertising, you can use the tools for deeper research. They will show you search volumes, costs per click, even who the competitors are and how many.

Choosing the right keywords for PPC Adwords will save you money and get you better results with your campaigns.

You might have to upgrade into a paid version of the Keyword Tool to get the information you want. This is a more advanced keyword research.

When doing your keyword research, always make note of the companies and domains that are ranking at the top.

keywords really matter

Are the top page rankers huge companies and bloggers that have tens of thousands of subscribers and millions of website visits each month? You would want to stay away from even trying to rank with those giants.

This is why we say that it's advantageous, especially when you are getting started, to go after a much narrower niche and target market. The narrower the better.

This is also why we talk about long-tail keywords. You use those to narrow your niche.

Keywords Really Matter When Used In The Correct Way.

Keywords must be used correctly. Place them in page and post titles, preferrably at the beginning of the title.

Also place your keywords in the meta descriptions and "sprinkle" throughout the post content where it makes sense.

If you are using WordPress, the Yoast SEO plugin will make your life easy when it comes to placing these keywords. Yoast is a free SEO tool that is a favorite for most WordPress bloggers and marketers.

keywords really matter

Make sure you keep the flow and that it reads naturally. This is a big thing for you to learn and use in the right way because a lot of your competitors will not be doing it correctly. You can fill a void and jump over them in the page rank results.

SEO Is Not An Exact Science

The use of keywords and SEO is not an exact science. It's not a black and white picture. There are some grey areas and it will require some testing and tweaking as you go.

No one really knows the exact Google algorithm. There are indicators to learn however and you can do well if you follow those indicators. Google is constantly changing so it is something you will want to keep track of.

But it's a learned skill and once you have it, it's with you for life. It can be very worth it. Learning SEO is a good investment of your time and your money.

Getting ranked on the first page of Google for your chosen niche can bring lots of additional traffic to your website and result in a steady growth of your business.

I hope you Got Some Value From This Post

Thank you for reading. Hopefully now you realize and understand that keywords really matter with Google and SEO ranking. I didn't think about it too much when I was new to online marketing, but now I'm fascinated with it all. There's a lot involved but worth it to learn. We see far too many people join a network marketing company or an affiliate program only to freeze when they don't know what to do after they join. If instead those people took the time and effort to learn how to market online first, they could come out of the gates blazing.

It's a common thing ... getting wrapped up in the excitement of a new gig causing us to not even think about what we will need to do next. I think most people start that way.
We did too. But we learned lessons and now we want to share our experiences, and how critical it is to get some basic fundamentals in online marketing. We hope we can provide some value in this area and help others realize that learning how to market online should be their first priority.

how to market online

Your Homebase and Your Hub

This is what we are doing now and you should too ... intensive internet marketing training. Learning how to blog and build a website. Use this as your homebase and your hub for feeding your social platforms. It is the key to building your own brand online. Providing good content that has value and benefits. It will attract other networkers to you. They will see the benefits and will want to do it also. Include all other aspects of internet marketing such as SEO, video marketing, and list building.

Make The Decision To Learn How To Market Online

Making a decision to learn how to market online and building your own brand online could be the best move you will ever make. It's not easy. It requires hard work and daily action. But it's worth it in the long run. We've been down this road and we learned some hard lessons. It's not fun wondering what to do next, or if you've made a mistake even getting involved. People quit days later after realizing they don't know what to do to make it happen.

Build Your Own Brand

Establishing your own brand and learning how to be seen, how to become known, and how to be everywhere will take all that guess work away. Things will be different when you learn how to market online properly. Anyone can do it. There's a ton of training available and for free too. You will need to invest in some low cost marketing tools and aides like hosting and domains but it's not a big deal. Compare it to expenses for starting and building any other kind of business. There is no comparison.

When you learn how to market online you won't have to depend on any company or team or upline to do it for you. Sure, any help will be a bonus, but generally speaking, network marketing or direct sales companies have never been providers of the kind of marketing tools and materials that will set you apart from the crowd. They won't teach you how to build your brand and become the leader. They are busy providing a replicated website, and the products and infrastructure for managing your business. That is their priority as well it should be.

A good  network marketing company will provide a stable and long lasting platform for you to build a residual income, and some very basic marketing materials. That's all you will need when you become proficient at building your business.

how to market online

Your Priority Becomes Promoting The Brand Of You

So your priority becomes promoting you, and why people would want to join you. This will bring better results than if you are always branding the product and the company. Of course you have to do some of that, but it's also quite necessary to provide your own value as well. Naturally your friends will join you, but no one has ever built a walk away income with just their friends and family. Your reach will need to extend far beyond that. Learning how to market online will help you pull that off.

Get Good At Online Marketing

When you get good at online marketing you'll be able to choose any company you want or build any business you want. It won't matter ... you'll be able to build it. You will be the nucleus, and if you choose a good company or a good product, you'll then have a one, two punch.

We spent years rambling about, bouncing around, going here and going there, not knowing what to do first or what to do next. Don't do what we did. Decide now to learn how to market online, and then choose what you are going to build.

In this post we are going to cover consistent learning and why it is so critical to keeping yourself relevant in your niche, and to successfully grow an online business.

Regardless of how sufficient, or insufficient, your education and training might be when you launch your online business, consistent learning comes with the territory. Without a strong desire to keep learning, you'll get destroyed by those who are free and eager to continue their educations. Change is part of doing business. What was preferred yesterday might not be preferred today. This calls for all entrepreneurs to keep learning. To keep learning is to remain in business.

consistent learning

Consistent learning allows you to:

  • Keep In Front Of Market Shifts - Remember a few years back and it's remarkable just how much marketing techniques have evolved in online business. Who could have ever pictured that content marketing, or social media marketing, or even email marketing would be as essential now as it truly is? Whatever type of business you have today; if you're not engaged with the latest trends in marketing you're dead in the water.
  • Discover Techniques to Include In Your Business - Whether or not you are a specialist, it's essential to maintain updated solutions your prospects need. Consider whens it come to getting your website ranked on Google search engine. It wasn't so long ago anyone could rank first page. Just write an article or blog post and stuff it full of keywords. This "keyword stacking" practice was common and produced results. Nowadays though, you need to have some degree of knowledge in SEO to get anywhere near a first page ranking. It's an acquired skill that only the experience professional, or the zealous student will excel in.
  • Allows You To Develop New Products - When you keep educating yourself about your profession, you'll have more advantage to produce valuable products that address real issues. Problem fixers are always studying and schooling . They stay in business longer than those who are stuck on the same. Those who evolve with the times are those who excel.
  • Acquire Greater Knowledge of Your Target Market - The more you understand your audience, the more you'll recognize which problems need solutions. You'll also recognize how they choose to deal with their difficulties. Some people would rather have high technology, while others will not. You just can't identify that if you don't learn more about your target audience.

Ideas to continue learning are:

  • Take A Training Class - There are countless sources for classes and training today. Many industry instructors teach ways to properly promote and advertise on the internet. They even have college and university classes for this now. People who have prospered in their online business before you display various learning possibilities that you could and should make the most of. If you keep your eyes open, you'll see them.
  • Participate in Relevent Functions - Online business functions are great ways to discover things fast. You can create relationships that you might not typically make. It can seem strange and outside of your pleasure area but business functions are exceptional ways to stay connected and learn great new things about your niche.
  • Locate a Coach or Mentor - There are paid and unpaid coaching opportunities available if you keep your sights open. If you're brand-new to an area of interest, or you find a leader that you enjoy following, find out if you can train with them for a set amount of time for free. Be willing to dedicate 10 to 20 hours a week, and be prepared to learn.
  • Observe Industry Leaders - Those in your profession who are proven successful have a lot to show you. Never mind just how much of a pro you are; you can consistently learn from somebody else. Use social networks to find these leaders and follow them. Observe what they read and write and what they endorse.

As soon as you recognize that consistent learning long term is a process that you're planning to be engaged in always, you'll get to love it. Discovering new talents will always keep your business sharp and your market satisfied, and it will prevent you from perhaps being tired or becoming lost. Keep in mind, we don't use an adding machine for numbers anymore. Don't be left bringing up the rear.

For some people speech communicating is difficult. The thoughts are not always there when the words need to be spoken. Thank goodness for me there other communication skills I can use to grow my business. I prefer to go with my strengths, and speaking is definitely not one of my strengths.

I can write a good letter, one that expresses well what i need to get across, but it might take a few minutes to gather those thoughts. That works with writing .. you can mull on the topic for a bit, and rearrange the words on paper, until it flows.

That's not the case with speaking though. With speaking, there is no time to think about it., so unles you have your points on notes or cards that you can read, you might get twisted up, or worse yet draw a blank. I know too well about this.

Knowing the topic is a huge help

Communication Skills

Knowing your topic and your audience, why they are there and what they are looking for, is not just helpful but necessary. Interview type speaking works better for me. I don't have to remember what I should be saying, I just have to answer some questions. Some communication skills are easier for me than others

I've also had to learn to listen better. Listening better helps in several ways. I can get a far better idea of what the person is needing to hear back, and I can also transport myself and my mind and thoughts into the conversation for a better outcome. It becomes more of a conversation for me, and not just me talking "at" someone.

You don't have to be an expert

It's not necessary to be an expert, but it does help if you have a general knowledge of whatever it is you are talking about.

Answering a request for information is far easier for me then getting up in front of someone to give a speech. It's another one of those communication skills that I prefer. Providing information and answering questions does not require me to know all the answers that second ...I only have to know where to get them. I can follow up with the person once I do that.

The followup is key. I know you've heard this before, and you'll hear it again. It's a huge part of the communicating process especially for a person like me that is better at providing information through various forms like writing and doing videos. So it's very important that I become a pro at follow-up. A professional follow-upper, and a professional inviter. By getting good at these things, I don't have to be an expert speaker.

Being addicted to learning is a more common event than you might think. If affects many of us.

Are you in learning mode? Is there a networking strategy that you are certain you could benefit from if you only know exactly how to do it?

So the logical thing would be to dig up some training and start learning.... right? Of course!

learning

Learning is a good thing... heck learning is a great thing! But .... learning in theory and learning through application are two entirely different things, and unfortunately sometimes we get stuck in learning mode and just can't seem to move past it. But we have to. We have to move past it. Sometimes you just have to put the book down, and apply the lessons.

How many courses have you purchased, or how many books have you bought about how to market online? Maybe quite a few? If we spend all our time reading and learning and not doing, we will never see success. We might get smart, but we won't get rich.

Getting stuck in learning mode is an easy thing to do, and sometimes can be a really hard thing to get out of.

Hanging out on training calls and webinars can become a habit. Sometimes we'll hear the same lessons over and over, yet we keep going back to hear them again. Reading book after book on the same subject makes us an expert in theory.

Get out of that habit. Once you actually start implementing what you are learning, it's exhilerating. There's a great sense of pride and accomplishment that goes along with hearing the lesson, and then actually doing the thing. You can become unstoppable. That feeling will have you itching for the next lesson, so you can apply the new strategy.

learning

List building, creating lead capture pages, blogging, image editting, video marketing, and so much more. There is a ton of educational information at your fingertips. Google and Youtube are your best friends for learning. We are in the information age, and there are no longer any goood excuses for not doing something, because you don't know how. And most of it is free!

Want to learn how to do something? Great... Google it. But you have to learn and then apply. Learn, implement, practice, evaluate. Remember these steps each time you see a course you want to take. Are you really going to take the time to do all four on the list? If not, don't bother wasting your time or your money. There's nothing worse than getting stuck in the learning loop, if you are truly trying to get ahead with your marketing.

I had to teach myself how to learn.

Sounds funny right? But it's true! I had to learn how to learn. Take the lesson, and if the lesson includes an action, then stop, bookmark your page, or record the time on the video so you can go back, and then go do the thing until you know how. Physically do it. Once you start, you'll be addicted to learning how to do new things with your online marketing.

For the longest, when I heard a lesson that included an action, I neglected to stop to take the action. Instead I told myself I would go back to that part later... first I would finish the training. It's so good I don't want to stop now! But I never made it back. Next thing I know I'm on another training. Sounds familiar?

I'm always in learning mode, but I'm also in doing mode.

Learning without doing, for marketing, is a dead end. It's the doing that becomes the real learning. Reading watching and listening will get you started. Doing will take you where you want to do. Nothing has to be perfect. One of my mentors talks about imperfect action a lot, and I've come to seriously embrace this form of moving ahead and learning. Waiting until something you are doing is perfect, before publishing it, is a dead end. Imperfect action will take you across the finish line every time. You will get better. You will get perfect, but you have to start, in order to finish.

Goal Setting For Your Business – Are you doing this?

Are you practicing goal setting for your business? Is it giving you a positive result?

Goal setting for your business can be a big factor in your success, and can be a major contributor to staying organized and focused. The same applies to your marketing. It’s the marketing that will ultimately get you to the business success you seek. Setting marketing goals makes sense and should be a big part of the plan.

However, goal setting for your business can have the wrong effect if done incorrectly. If your
goals are not realistic, set too high, or not attainable for any reason, you are setting yourself up for discouragement and ultimately failure. You have to keep it real. It’s critical.

Set Your Goals Realistically

Long term goals are good to have, but don’t confuse dreams with goals. If it’s going togoal setting for your business take you years to
hit a goal, you might get discouraged and give up before you ever get there. Keeping your motivation is helped greatly by building from achieved goal to achieved goal.

Short term realistic goals will keep you going. You can have daily goals, weekly goals, monthly goals, and yearly goals. Daily marketing goals if practiced regularly can become matters of routine and daily tasks. In addition, regular organized and do-able short terms goals can really help you stay on track and productive.

Have A Purpose – It’s easier to set realistic marketing goals if you have a mission and a purpose. You would be surprised though how many people are just floundering about not really knowing exactly what they are trying to achieve. With a purpose, you have a target in sight and the goals make more sense.

Know Where You Are And Where You Want To Go

Where are you now – Where do you stand in your marketing at this time. Do you have a list to promote to already, or do you need to build one. Do you have a good group of followers on social media, or is that also something that you need to work on. How do you plan to accomplish that?

Where do you want to be – Knowing where you are now, and where you want to go, is a big factor in goal setting for your business. Are your goals realistic in that you can reach them in a reasonable amount of time? Or are your goals so big and out of reach that only a miracle can make them happen? What kind of marketing are you doing now? Do you feel you are excelling in any areas? Are there some areas you
want to start, explore, or learn?

Adjust The Goal Setting For Your Business and Marketing As Needed

With these parameters and goals set, it now becomes a simple part of the equation goal setting for your businessto know exactly what has to happen next. You can adjust your goals as you go according to your progress, or lack of. Adjust your goals and keep them realistic and attainable as you go, so you don’t feel as if you are losing even if your production is not what you had hoped for. On the other side, if you production is beyond what you envisioned, you can set higher goals.

Know your audience well, and know your products and services well. Being able to answer questions and direct and lead, will help you in knowing what to do next. Knowing how to map out your activities, and knowing what goals to set in your marketing efforts will help too.

Goal setting for your business is something that should not be overlooked by any business builder, provided it’s done correctly and realistically.

Improve Your Marketing Skills by Following Other Successful People

One of the best ways to improve your marketing skills and learn more is to find people with a style that you like, and that are doing what you would like to do …and then do what they do. Follow those people and apply their methods to your own marketing, while at the same time giving your content your own voice. Don’t copy and paste them …learn their methods and strategies, then add your own sauce on top.

Improve Your Marketing Skills
Improve Your Marketing Skills

It’s ok to use other people’s material if you are using it as examples to write or develop your own. It’s a great way to self-teach. If you’re just copying and pasting all the time, you aren’t learning anything, you are only plagiarizing… but using another successful person’s methods to study, and to apply with your own style and voice is an excellent way to learn and get better.

Here are some areas you might consider using from someone else to help further your marketing education and improve your marketing skills.

* Follow Them on All Social Media Accounts – If they are getting good engagement try to determine why that is. Notice how they are posting and what kinds of content they are putting out there. What kind of ratios are you seeing personal content vs business type stuff, if any at all? Are they conversing with people’s comments, or do they appear to hit and run? Are you seeing any method that appears to be feeding and fueling the engagement? What methods of delivering their message are they using… and is it always the same or is there a mix? Do you see them leading their followers to other channels or other content mediums such as blogs, video’s, websites, or other social media platforms? In addition, look carefully over their profiles… do you see any differences between theirs and yours? More branding maybe, or more About Me content? How about the cover image and the profile image.. any styling or content differences there?

* Sign Up For Their Email List – Watching how an experienced marketer works their list is golden. You can even set up a folder and save the emails, and start rewriting them in your own words. Taking note of the methods and the order and sequences that they do stuff, can help you tons. Pay attention to subject lines and formatting. Is it engaging, easy to read… do the subject lines make you want to open that email now? In addition… if you are getting promotional emails into your inbox pay attention to those also. When one comes through that makes you want to open it, why is that? Subject lines can actually make or break an email marketer. Remember, if you are moved to open an email because of the subject line, there’s a pretty good chance that others will too … so save it!

* Read Their Blog Often – Subscribe to their blogs so you get notified when new posts go out. Notice how often and what kind of topics they are writing about. Does the content appear to have value? Do you think it is compelling readers to want to come back or stay tuned for more? Are they getting comments and do they respond to the comments? How are they communicating? Do they appear to talk “at” their audience, or “with” their audience? Are they asking their readers to share their content, and do they have their blogs set up so that the posts are easy to share? How about the side bars…see anything there that gets your attention? Are they building a list or advertising on their blog as well? Pay attention to these things and when you see stuff they are doing that you want to do, then start studying and learning it.

* Subscribe to Their Youtube Channel – How often are they publishing videos? How long are the videos and what kind of content do you see in the videos? Are they screenshot videos, how-to videos, power point videos? Do they put themselves in their videos or just do voice overs? There’s a lot of different styles of videos. Look at how many views the videos get. Is there any particular style of video that gets more views than the others? Also, pay attention to the descriptions below the video …. what are they doing there? Can you get any tips from this?

* Google Them – Put their name in Google search… what do you see? Now Google your name. Any differences? Can you see some areas you might want to work on? In many cases when a person is considering working with another person, the first thing they do is go Google their name to see how active and engaged they are? Often times people sponsor shop… they are looking for someone that can help them in some way. If they Google a person’s name and there’s nothing … they
might keep shopping.

Everyone wants to improve their marketing skills. The methods just mentioned I have found to be particularly rewarding. Hope you get the same results!

Ok so someone has presented a product and an opportunity to you, the beginner network marketer, that sounds incredible.

You are excited and you join with big hopes and plans. You are pumped, motivated, and ready to go. This product is so good it’s going to sell itself! That’s what they told you. You are going to tell some friends who are going to tell their friends and it’s going to take off! That’s what they told you!

Newsflash … no product sells itself, and no one has built a big successful business just telling their friends … sorry to say.

It’s a business, and like any other business it requires marketing …real marketing. Something you are going to have to get your mind around, and skills you are beginner-network-marketer.jpggoing to have to learn and apply.

Think about this….a master mechanic who knows engines inside and out, who can troubleshoot and is handy with tools, may not necessarily be able to build a successful auto repair business. It takes marketing, customer support and satisfaction, team training and assistance, lots and lots of followup, and more.

It’s the mindset that distinguishes the technician from the successful business owner. The mindset that drives you to take the necessary actions, get the necessary training, do the necessary daily tasks, the follow ups, and all the rest of the duties that need to be done aside from just fixing the car. The same applies to the beginner network marketer. You have to become, and portray yourself as the leader and the marketer…. not the “I’m a rep for such-and-such a company”. The product is not going to sell itself, and your friends are not going to tell all their friends.

beginner-network-marketer.jpgYou want to be a network marketer?… you need to start walking, talking, and acting like a network marketer. You need to get yourself all the necessary training and coaching and mentorship. You need to learn how to define your target market, connect with those people, show them how you can help them, provide a solution to a problem, convince them that you are a good reliable hard working sponsor, mentor, and coach, and show them the way.

Not everyone is your prospect…. not everyone cares what you are doing or what you are offering… not everyone has the same desires needs and wants that you have, and not everyone dreams like you dream. You have to learn how to find those people by analyzing, sorting, sifting, and priming your market.

There’s a saying you may know. If you owned a car wash who is your market? No it’s not people with cars, and no it’s not people with dirty cars… it’s people who want a clean car. Do you see? If you have a hot dog stand, you don’t need the best most super duper dog in the county, you don’t need the cheapest dog available, and you don’t need a supersonic advertising budget. You just need a hungry crowd.beginner-network-marketer.jpg

Learning how to target a market… your market… capture leads from that market, and follow up with those people in a non-obtrusive fashion and in a way that makes people want to listen to you, or maybe even work with you, is the secret sauce. This is a skill in itself …attraction marketing, relationship marketing, content marketing…. whatever you want to call it… or sometimes just simply being likable. will get you a long long way.

We will continue to talk about these things, of course. This is what we do and it’s what we teach…. but for now it’s all about your mindset… are you, the beginner network marketer willing to do the things necessary? How bad do you want it, how hungry are you, how determined are you, and how persistent are you. Do you have what it takes to stick with it through the tough slow times, because there will be tough slow times.. and do you have what it takes to go the distance. Not everyone does… do you?

What Would You Consider To Be Your Greatest Business Asset?

Would it be your list, your website, your system, your company, or your product? All those things are vitally important yes…. but which is the most valuable to your business?

This is a topic that has slowly come to make more sense to me the longer I am in this business. What really is my greatest business asset? …and what really is my greatest contribution to that asset?

One will get a lot of varying answers to this question…. but when i realized my greatest business asset was my audience, and that the way I connected with that audience was so critical… then things began to change. Coming to the realization that the content I created and put out had everything to do with them, and not me… what they wanted and not what i wanted, it all became crystal clear..

bussiness-asset-jpg

Our audiences require, and demand, relevant content to their needs…. not what I want to hear and see, but what they want to hear and see. The content we create must be helpful… it must be interesting and informative, and easy to read, listen to and watch… for them not for us.

The stuff we put out really doesn’t have to be cute, or in-depth… it doesn’t have to be hyped up, or overly clever… it simply needs to fill a need and solve a problem … simply. Easy to understand, easy to comprehend, and easy to please. If it can solve a problem or fill a need, that’s really all that’s required.

If the content can do that, then it’s good content… if it cannot, then it’s not good content. Does that make sense? It’s only relevant if your audience says it is… it’s only helpful if they think it is, and it’s only rewarding if it’s rewarding to them.

I’ve learned that putting my needs and wants aside, and putting my audiences needs and wants as the top priority…the following things began to happen….

  • The content became easier to write.

    business-asset-jpg
    Business Asset
  • My focus became content that was more reader-friendly.
  • I started sounding less like a giant business and more like a friendly human being who was simply providing answers to questions.
  • I stopped trying to make my content “impressive” and started trying to make it clear and useful.
  • The answers to the questions became more precise, clear, and to the point.
  • I quit using “clever” headlines and start using benefit-rich ones.
  • I started to see more engagement to the content I was delivering.

My conclusion … stop talking at or around your audience, and start talking WITH them… more like a two-way conversation. When you serve your audience with what they need and want, in a friendly useful easy to understand manner…and provide helpful material that they can relate to, benefit from, or that will help fill a need or solve a problem… then they want more. So you see… it’s your audience that is your greatest business asset.
