When I first started blogging I often wondered what the fuss about keywords was all about. Was it really important? How do they benefit me? Do keywords really matter?

Do you find yourself asking the same questions?

In this blog post we will answer these questions.

First let me state .... I'm not a keyword or an SEO expert. But I do a lot or reading and studying on the subject and I find that being a student allows me to share what I'm learning. I learn better and remember longer if I turn right around and teach what I learn.

I started my research by typing in the phrase "do keywords really matter" into Google Search. It seems I'm not the only one asking or writing on this topic. It's actually quite popular.

Keywords Really Do Matter

Maybe not quite to the degree that they used to, but yes, keywords really do matter. When used properly..

A very important key thing is HOW they are used. The days of keyword stuffing are long gone.

There was a time that a person could get an article or post ranked simply by inserting a bunch of their main keywords into the article in any way, shape, or form. Not only does that not work any longer, it will work against you if you do it.

Your keywords need to be strategically placed. Not only in the title, the URL, and the meta description, but throughout the post as well. But it has to make sense. The keywords must fit accordingly, so as to flow with the content.

Google is now looking more for high quality content that has value and that reads well. Therefore, the keywords must be integrated and a relevant part of the article.

Profitable Keywords vs Junk Keywords

There is a difference. Keywords can make you or break you. That's why I say there are profitable keywords, and there are junk keywords.

If keywords are used correctly, they can be very profitable. But if used incorrectly, they are junk. And sometimes worse than junk. They can give you a black eye with Google and lead to you being penalized.

If a person is trying to trick Google with improperly used keywords they will be sorry. You may have heard of Black Hat SEO vs White Hat SEO. That's a whole other subject and post, but we'll only be talking about and recommending White Hat SEO. Doing it the right way.

I will say this much on the matter. If you are using Black Hat SEO methods, you are playing with fire. Google will get you sooner or later.

If Keywords Really Matter How Do I Choose The Right Ones

There are tools and methods of keyword research that will help you learn to choose good relevant long-tail keywords.

Keyword Tool is free and it's easy to use you. Type in the main keyword and the tool will show you a lot of variations of that word. They are listed in order by how often they are used in searches. This will give you ideas.

keywords really matter

You can also use Google Search itself.

First you'll get the SERP results (Search Engine Rank Page) so you can see what others are doing, and secondly you'll see at the bottom of the SERP page Google's "related searched" listing which is a great way to revise keywords.

Is Your Keyword Too Popular ? How Can You Find Out?

Google Search can also tell you how popular a keyword is. Realizing this can help you deter from trying to compete with words and with bloggers that are just too big and too competitive to even mess around with.

To find out start first with a general and popular keyword and note the number of pages of results.

keywords really matter

Now try a long-tail keyword. Use "quotes" around the phrase so the results are only for that particular phrase or set of words. Look at how many pages of results you get. Do you notice the difference? Would you rather compete with words that bring back 100's of pages, or a handful of pages?

Do you think it would be easier to get on the first page of Google using long tailed keywords?

If you answered yes, you are correct.

Keywords Really Matter For PPC Advertising Too

If you have expanded to the level of doing some Google Adwords advertising, you can use the tools for deeper research. They will show you search volumes, costs per click, even who the competitors are and how many.

Choosing the right keywords for PPC Adwords will save you money and get you better results with your campaigns.

You might have to upgrade into a paid version of the Keyword Tool to get the information you want. This is a more advanced keyword research.

When doing your keyword research, always make note of the companies and domains that are ranking at the top.

keywords really matter

Are the top page rankers huge companies and bloggers that have tens of thousands of subscribers and millions of website visits each month? You would want to stay away from even trying to rank with those giants.

This is why we say that it's advantageous, especially when you are getting started, to go after a much narrower niche and target market. The narrower the better.

This is also why we talk about long-tail keywords. You use those to narrow your niche.

Keywords Really Matter When Used In The Correct Way.

Keywords must be used correctly. Place them in page and post titles, preferrably at the beginning of the title.

Also place your keywords in the meta descriptions and "sprinkle" throughout the post content where it makes sense.

If you are using WordPress, the Yoast SEO plugin will make your life easy when it comes to placing these keywords. Yoast is a free SEO tool that is a favorite for most WordPress bloggers and marketers.

keywords really matter

Make sure you keep the flow and that it reads naturally. This is a big thing for you to learn and use in the right way because a lot of your competitors will not be doing it correctly. You can fill a void and jump over them in the page rank results.

SEO Is Not An Exact Science

The use of keywords and SEO is not an exact science. It's not a black and white picture. There are some grey areas and it will require some testing and tweaking as you go.

No one really knows the exact Google algorithm. There are indicators to learn however and you can do well if you follow those indicators. Google is constantly changing so it is something you will want to keep track of.

But it's a learned skill and once you have it, it's with you for life. It can be very worth it. Learning SEO is a good investment of your time and your money.

Getting ranked on the first page of Google for your chosen niche can bring lots of additional traffic to your website and result in a steady growth of your business.

I hope you Got Some Value From This Post

Thank you for reading. Hopefully now you realize and understand that keywords really matter with Google and SEO ranking. I didn't think about it too much when I was new to online marketing, but now I'm fascinated with it all. There's a lot involved but worth it to learn. Check back often as I'll be adding to this post with updates and additional information.

There are right ways and wrong ways of doing just about everything ... would you agree? Writing blog posts and articles are no exception. At least not if you want to get read, and if you want people to take you seriously, and to come back for more.

Formats, styles, content, and how you deliver is ever evolving, but one thing remains constant, and that's how you write to get your readers attention, and to keep their attention.

The fact is, there are some critical basics for writing blog posts that never go out of style. I've listed a few of those here for you.

1. Know Who You Are Writing To

I'm sure you've heard it before about a gazillion times... know your audience. It only makes sense though. I do not need to spend a lot of time here. It kind of goes without saying that you will know who your target audience is. But even so... knowing who your audience is, and what they need to hear might be two slightly different things. It's crucial to provide content that your readers have an interest in, and in a way that will capture and keep them.

2. Know Your Topic

There's big talk about the importance of being consistent and regular in your online content. And it's true, you do need to be somewhat consistent. But that doesn't mean writing randomly about the sky just to get something out there. You do have to have a topic, and you do need to know something about it. So study up on your chosen topic if you need to. We are all a mouse click away from the largest information source in the world and it's all free, so use it.

3. Stories Don't Just Tell They Also Sell

Get personal. Write like a fellow human being and like a friend. Tell your story. Weave it in with your topic and content. You'll be amazed at the difference in reactions and attention. People love it when they have something they can really relate too. Your story may be their story too. Everyone can appreciate a good story, and now you are not just writing, but conversing as well. There is nothing better than captivating the attention of your reader with something that has an impact on them. Stories can do that well.

writing blog posts

4. Use Bold Headlines That Summarize The Content

Headline your article, and some of your paragraphs too. Headlines should not be tricky or cute. That's hard to pull off. Headlines should do nothing but tell the reader what they are about to hear. Use your headlines to "hook" the reader, but never in a deceptive way. Creating good "hooker" headlines is a skill that you will learn and get better at. When a reader stays you know they are intrigued and want to learn more.

5. Provide Value For Your Readers

Gone are the days of keyword stacking and rambling just to deliver content. Google, and your readers, want to see real content that means something. You can suggest, recommend, teach, opinionate, summarize, educate, or narrate, but just make sure your reader walks away feeling as though they got something from reading your post. Provide value and benefit. That is what will keep your audience coming back for more.

6. Discuss Benefits Not Features

It's all about them ... the readers. How will your product make them feel, or make things easier for them, or change their financial situation. Regardless of what your product is, your readers don't care so much about all the features of the product, they care about how it will affect them. Tell your story, or the product story, in a way that makes it about them, the reader. How will THEY benefit?

writing blog posts

7. Be Specific, Explain, and Provide Details

Will you agree that some of the reason for doing all this is to be found on the internet when people search for something? That means writing blog posts the way Google wants to see them written. They are the ones that need to be kept happy when it comes to page rank (your ranking or positioning in the search engine results).

There was a time when a blogger could write in just about any way, at any length, and stuff a bunch of keywords anywhere in the content. Not any more. Now google wants to see high quality content, details, and explanations, and quite frankly so does your readers. They can get filler and fluff anywhere. Google also wants to see longer posts than before. Keywords need to be strategically placed within the content in a way that makes good reading. It should all flow and make sense.

8. Include Images

Images do three things. They provide more SEO juice for Google, they get the readers attention, and they break up your content so it's more visually stimulating. Your images should relate to your topic in some way. It can be indirectly, but it should have some kind of connection, even if it's symbolic in a sense. You'll be able to keyword tag your images which is one of the SEO magnets. Your images can also be found in search engines for additional exposure back to your brand. Images are one of the most attention grabbing pieces of content used today. So are videos.

9.Just Get Started

Above all else ... just get started and you can perfect your blogging skills and your SEO knowledge along the way.Yes, Google will be looking for all the things I mentioned in the previous paragraphs. But that doesn't mean holding yourself back thinking it all has to be perfect or that you need to know everything. Writing blog posts is something that you will get better at as you go.

writing blog posts

The main thing is to get started. You can learn and get better as you go. You won't break anything and you won't be spanked. These are simply guidelines and things to work towards. Just get started and you'll be surprised how fast you get the hang of it.

So there you have it. The A,B,C's of writing blog posts. It's not rocket science and it does not have to be perfect. It's better to be constant and conform as best you can to these simple basics. The rest will all come with repetition. You'll be fine. Writing blog posts does not have to be a dreaded chore. You can enjoy yourself doing it. So have fun and happy blogging to you!

Do you want to create a brand online?

Try content marketing and get yourself noticed. There are two things that I learned early in my internet marketing career that must be done to even think about becoming successful online - Getting Seen, and Becoming Known.

With content marketing strategies you can accomplish both those things.

Content marketing is inexpensive, and it's easy (if you like writing and creating stuff). It's also a true investment in your business that can pay off over and over again, for years to come. You can literally create content today and have it still working for you a year from now ... or even 5 years from now. They call it marketing, but it's really just about teaching and educating interested parties on some subject. Teaching and engaging people ...bringing them into your fold by providing useful content.

It's a simple concept

Do you remember having a favorite teacher in school because they taught cool stuff that actually meant something to you? Stuff that you could use in real life. Stuff that might benefit you in some way? Or how about that friend who was unique and that always had something interesting going on. You were always open to hearing what they were up to right? You may even have thought that you could learn some things from that person.

Consider the 5 points below to get you started with content marketing. Start your journey of becoming that go-to person for some of you contacts.

1. Choose A Topic

Everyone is good at something .... everyone has something to share on some given subject ...everyone has something to contribute that others can get some use from.

2. Create a Website for Your Content

You have to have a home for your content. A central place you can send people, so they know who you are and what you are about. Your website is your home base. This is where you will drive traffic either through free marketing or paid advertising. Consider it your hub that everything else will link to or link from. It doesn't matter if you have a bricks and mortar business or if you are strictly online. Sending traffic to your website is what get's them in the door.

content marketing

3. Create Your Content in Multiple Formats

This is where it gets fun. You can take the same material and spin and twist it over and over again into different formats and different delivery methods ... always keeping it fresh and new. Each time you will come up with new stuff to add, or a better way to say it ... or a better way to show it. It develops into a new creation every time. This is how you re-purpose your content. Imagine ... blog posts and articles, short reports, eBooks, videos, and podcasts. These are all types of content that you can and should should utilize.

4. Build Your Email List

The money is in the list. Yes we do hear that all the time don't we? Over and over again. So are you building a list? Have you learned how to build a list? Using content marketing is an excellent way to do it. Show people good value and they want more. Once you get people to opt-in to your list trust me you will not have trouble knowing what to send them next. One great method is to use others people stuff. Spin it into your own words and put your brand on it. You don't copy and paste. You use other peoples material to get you started ... to get the gears turning in your brain ... and take it from there. Makes sense right?

5. Market Content on Social Media

Well of course! You are on social media ... I am on social media ... everyone is on social media. So use it to your benefit! Share everything on social media, and the great thing about content marketing is that it doesn't get boring. You are mixing up all your delivery methods. Nothing is ever the same. Share your blog posts, your how-to vidoes, your explainer videos, your voice over videos... there are so many different variations of videos and thats the #1 method today. AND ... put share buttons on everything! When your content becomes so good that people start to share it on social medis... then you know you are well on your way.

content marketing

Now .. rinse and repeat

You will develop a style and a routine that gets easier and easier. You might start with a blog post, turn it into a podcast, then a video of you, then a power point type video with voice-over. You can take your blog post and turn it into several social media posts. Bring images into the mix. Brand your images with your name and website domain. You get the idea right?

Content Marketing - the simple strategy of sharing material in different formats that people find useful and benefit from.

I'm not an SEO expert... far from it. In fact I would go so far as to say I'm still an SEO beginner .. it's certainly not the main aspect of my networking business, but it is an aspect. I am aware of it. We should all be at least aware of it. I do some reading on the subject and I like to see my sites getting ranked on Google and my videos on YouTube. Any well rounded online marketer will know that search engine optimization does have some relevance.

So I've learned the search engine optimization basics, and happy to pass those on to some other beginners.

Search engines are ever evolving.

Google has an army of technicians tweaking their data daily. Most changes are good for the end user, but it does require us to stay on our toes if we want to keep up with the latest changes and updates. If a person does not catch-up, or keep up, it can be a little confusing and a bit if a guessing game.

search engine optimization

For those who need a crash course, search engines serve to find and create different search results based on the "keywords" that are put into the search box. The technology is smart though and getting smarter. Your results can be a reflection of some of your history and habits. They might pull up pages for you based on pages you've found useful in the past, or your profile if you have one, or your location, or a number of other things relative to your habits.

For the marketer who is counting on rankings to get traffic, keeping up with the changes will become a continual thing, and could become a challenge to stay in front of. Google's search engines programming will continue to evolve and grow and change, making it necessary to stay in tune with what' s happening. The basics will remain pretty straight forward, but some of the SEO marketers get deeply involved with the technology and it becomes quite competitive.

Those who stay in the know, will win the SEO game..

Google does however continue to provide a good assortment of tools and training for webmasters to help them improve their page ranks.

One thing that has not changed: The marketers most powerful weapon in their arsenal will remain high quality content to attract their audiences. So regardless of how techie you are on search engine optimization, your job stays the same ... to continue creating well written authority content. If you do that you will continue to rank.

Don't try to trick the search engines, they are 3 steps ahead of you. Instead focus on providing quality content your audience wants and needs. That is your main objective. You can always study to learn the nuances of SEO if you want, but do that first.

Search Engine Optimization Still Works

Yes it does work... it will get you traffic, and some niches are better served by search engine optimization than others. SEO works exceptionally well for local businesses, maybe because the keywords inserted tend to be more precise. I'm not sure, but even so, online businesses where location does not matter can benefit from SEO as well. Provided of course that you are delivering great content and lots of it, and you understand how to use keywords properly.

Long gone are the days of keyword stuffing, and you don't want your content to look unnatural in any way, just to insert a keyword. There was a time that was acceptable and even recommended but hose days do not exist any longer. You will get the exact opposite result... in the form of penalties from Google.

search engine optimization

So keep it natural, insert the keywords where they make sense and keep the story flowing. Of course you want to continue using your keywords in your page titles, tags, subtitles, and headers.

Use Social Media to Drive Traffic

Social media has become a force for marketers i think we can all agree on that... but ... don't for a minute think it has replaced websites for sending traffic to. Social media is a means to drive traffic to those sites. (or your brick and mortar store). You don't want your audience to go to social media and stay there, and you don't want your social media base to not experience a well rounded marketing loop or funnel. You still want to take them on a journey that educates and informs them along the way, on autopilot.

Social media is a great place for an initial contact or introduction... a means for people getting to know you, and then getting into your funnel. Your website and blog are you base. Your websites still are used to build your list. So getting ranked in google (and YouTube) will remain a force with savvy networkers.

Things evolve quickly online these days. Yes search engine optimization is still a major factor, but also pay attention to video, webinars, online events, and more traffic generating technologies that have become prevalent today. Bottom line .... continue to focus on delivering high quality useful content that is focused on your audience, and you will benefit from search engine traffic.

SEO Tactics That Work Today

Because of all the talk lately about Google changing the way they are ranking sites and what criteria they are using, I’ve found myself paying more attention to any posts or articles I see on the subject.

Since I’m relatively new to the ins and outs of SEO, these revelations to me are a bit pleasing. It seems now there’s more equal footing among all the participants. I’m hearing that what used to work doesn’t work so well any more. Could this mean that some of the kings of the hill may have to re-access, or even re-train to hold their kingdoms?

Regardless, us little guys still have disadvantages I’m sure, but where there’s hope, there’s also a will to beat the odds…and I’ve always been one to welcome a challenge with open arms. I’m more than willing to learn the SEO tactics that work in today’s world, and put them into practice to see where they take me.

So I’ll just keep on reading, studying, learning, and writing … and see what becomes of it. One of my favorite learning methods that helps stuff “stick” for me, is to write about it as I learn about it.

seo-tactics-that-work.jpg
SEO Tactics That Work Today

So here we go.

The following is some of what I’ve been able to pick up on the subject of SEO tactics that work today, and what used to work that’s not working so well any more.

What used to work tactic #1: More links means higher ranking

I’ll say it again… having recently come on the scene, I never did perfect the art of back linking, but from what it sounds like here, that’s ok… it’s obsolete. According to Google’s latest algorithm criteria, quality over quantity… or maybe better said… “relevancy” over quantity. Now the question becomes what exactly is relevancy in Google eyes. We know the definition of the word of course, but in relation to ranking, what exactly is more relevant. I’ll be doing some more studying, and writing, on this matter.

But before I sign off this subject, someone said “when it comes to your website, don’t try to go after quantity in link building. Focus on building highly relevant links that are topical to the content on your website”. Those are the SEO tactics that work better now.

What used to work tactic #2: SEO is about writing keyword-rich content

Also known as keyword stacking, or keyword stuffing…. in regards to ranking it’s a thing of the past. Gone are the days of stuffing a post full of your targeted keywords to the point of over redundancy. It doesn’t look good, it doesn’t sound good, and it doesn’t rank good any more.

Times are changing, technology is evolving, and somehow Google can decipher words that are similar. It’s now more about user-friendly posts that make sense, and that linguistically roll smoothly… not repetitive keywords that are obviously inserted where they don’t belong just to have “more”. Use keywords in your post or text, sure, if they fit and make sense and it rolls smooth and is understandable and user-friendly. Google will figure it out and rank you for providing quality content that people want to read, and for practicing the SEO tactics that work in this day and age.

What used to work tactic #3: SEO is just links, code, and contentseo-tactics-that-work.jpg

That’s what used to rank… mediocre content, tons of backlinks, and keywords stuffed wherever just to optimize the site. No longer the case. Google is now looking for high quality content, easy reading that is valuable, and a site with a good social following. Social media now matters … to what degree is still debatable from what I understand there is a definite connection. Is your site popular? Does it have a social media following? If you want better rankings, don’t just focus on link building. Also focus on building up your social profiles.

What used to work tactic #4: More pages means more traffic

If google wants content well then we’ll just give it content … lots of it. We’ll just add more pages. Right?

Well … maybe once upon a time, but hold on now not so fast. Google wants content yes sure… but good high quality relevant content, not just lots of it. Adding more content won’t necessarily help you, especially if it’s mediocre content. If the pages are not high in quality they won’t rank well. Don’t create sites with thousands of pages. Focus on creating high quality content.

What used to work tactic #5: You need a lot of text to rank well

No…. not any more. Images, videos, infographics, charts, podcasts, and more will add more quality content and boost your rankings. Mix it up, keep it fresh, keep it relevant, keep it interesting, easy to read, user-friendly, but worthwhile and valuable.

So this is what I’m concluding based on the information I have seen, read, and heard… if you’re old school and notice your sites are not ranking like they used to, there might be some tweaking in need. Stop doing what’s obsolete, and start doing what Google wants to see done now. The SEO tactics that work today, have evolved from what worked yesterday.

Do you know you do not have to be an expert at SEO marketing to move up in rank?

Are you aware of the changes taking place in the SEO world, and that content quality now trumps keyword quantity?

seo-marketing-jpgI have never been an expert at Search Engine Optimization, and probably never will be… in fact it’s not a desire of mine to be..at least not now. There are so many different ways of spreading your message and leveraging your time and efforts to establish yourself as a leader and a person of authority in your niche, that for me, spending so much time on that one thing now I think would be counterproductive. Don’t get me wrong…. I’m a firm believer in choosing one thing at a time to become really really good at, before tackling the next. It’s just that there is so much to analyze, scrutinize, study, and test….and still from what I read no one ever really knows for sure, that I’m better perfecting that which I’m already somewhat good at and comfortable with.

There will come a time when I’m ready to get more into the finer details of SEO marketing, and I know it’s important, but I’ve also been reading and hearing that it’s all changing as we speak anyhow. Apparently keyword stuffing is no longer the way…it’s more based upong quality content.

Here let me share some points with you that I picked up in a few recent articles.

SEO Marketing 2In the old days “optimization” was heavily determined by the certain locations (on the page) of keywords. Today that’s no longer the case for two key reasons …

  •  Google and Bing algorithms are more complex and don’t look for that so much any more
  •  Strategically placed keywords usually don’t create a smooth flow in the content of the page. Now it’s more about a well written and well worded page

One of the experts said …”Personally, I’m happy to sacrifice “perfect” keyword placement in the title element or a URL for better user experience, a higher chance of having my content shared on social networks, or a better click-through rate in the search results”.

General consensus for best practices for a page went something like this…

  • Unique content (the exact same words in the exact same order do not appear elsewhere on the web)
  •   Unique Value (equal value cannot be found on other pages)
  •   Easy to UNderstand
  •   Loads quickly
  •  Visually Attractive

Although the keyword placements do not carry as much weight as they used to, there are still some important factors of placement for them… The following are still important:

  • Page Title – At least once in the title and as near to the start of the title as possible
  • Headline – A searcher expects to see a matching headline on the page they visit
  • Body Text – Keywords (in a relevent way) in the content of the page are important
  • URL – Use your keyword phrase in the URL
  • Images – The image’s title, filename, and alt attribute all matter from a ranking perspective
  • Meta Description – The meta description tag, if it employs the keyword query, usually shows up in the search resultsseo-marketing-jpg

Built to be shared through social networks – A well-optimized page should help to make social sharing as easy and seamless as possible, including:

  •  Using obvious social sharing buttons that are targeted to the page’s audience.
  •  Make content that has inherent viral value. Think about a social influencer and ask yourself, “would I share this page if I came across it?”
  •  Craft URLs that are short and descriptive so that copying/pasting (for those who prefer) is painless

So you see..there are some things even us SEO marketing amateurs can do to move up in placements and establish our identities and brands using search engine traffic…and I don’t know about you but I will be continuing to better my SEO marketing skills.
